Tucson is tucked into the southeastern corner
of Arizona. Four ranges of majestic mountains surround Tucson and
often change color before your eyes! To the north are the Catalina
Mountains (9,100 feet), to the east the Rincon Mountains, south are
the Santa Rita Mountains, and west are the Tucson Mountains. These
mountains offer an abundance of hiking trails, national forest
lands, and many other outdoor activities, including mountain biking,
climbing, camping and scenic driving.
With a population of about 875,000, Tucson is
expected to reach 1 million by 2010 or so. A little knowledge of
Tucson’s unique history will expand your appreciation of the desert
landscape, the wild life, the climate and the diversity of cultures
that have made their homes here. Spanish soldiers established the
city as the Presidio of San Augustin de Tucson. When Mexico won its
independence from Spain, Tucson briefly became part of Mexico, but
was later purchased the United States as part of the Gadsden
Purchase in the mid 19th century. Arizona was the 48th
territory to become a state in 1912.
Average temperatures in January range from 38
to 64 degrees Fahrenheit, while in July averages are 74 to 98
degrees. The average annual rainfall is about 12 inches and
relatively low humidity provides cool evenings, even during the
summer.
